A year after the devastating Jasper wildfires, journalist and Jasper, Alberta, resident Niki Wilson reflects on personal and community impacts, the ups and downs following the disaster, and the long road to recovery and healing in a Canadian Geographic article The Year of the Fire.
In the article, Michael Higgins, Project Director with our Climate Readiness and Community Recovery team, shares his insights on the complex challenges communities face in the aftermath of a wildfire or other extreme weather event, describing it as “an emotional roller-coaster with big highs and lows before it returns to a regular rhythm after several years.” Michael supports communities like Jasper across Canada in structuring their recoveries, drawing on his background in the Canadian military serving as a wildland firefighter, as well as his experience in disaster planning and recovery with local and provincial governments in British Columbia.
