The Township of Mapleton’s Council recently endorsed multiple proposed initiatives to facilitate additional housing in the community as part of a planned application to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF).

Jonathan Lampman, Senior Project Manager with Colliers Project Leaders, presented an overview of 11 potential options that the township could include in its application, including changing land use policies and regulations to include permissions for accessory dwelling units and promoting density targets through infilling and the development of vacant land.

“The program is intended to drive transformational change within the sphere of control of the local government regarding land use planning and development approvals,” stated CAO Manny Baron in a report to Council. “The fund’s objective is to accelerate the supply of housing across Canada, resulting in at least 100,000 more housing units permitted than would have occurred without the program.”

While the Housing Accelerator Fund requires applicants to propose a minimum of seven action plan initiatives, Lampman provided an additional set in case some don’t meet CMHC parameters.
