The Sagkeeng First Nation in Manitoba held a sod-turning ceremony on March 8 for a new 10-unit housing complex designed for community members living with disabilities.
This long-awaited community project is the first of its kind in Canada. The new complex’s fully accessible living environment includes residential and shared common spaces, enabling the First Nation to improve program coordination and access to support for people living with disabilities in Sagkeeng.
As a participant in the Southeast Disability Initiative (SDI), Sagkeeng First Nation partnered with the University of Manitoba and the Sagkeeng Health Centre to initiate the project. The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Indigenous Services Canada and the Sagkeeng First Nation provided funding for the housing complex.
As a partner of Sagkeeng First Nation since 2020, we are proud to help bring this critical housing project to fruition. Colliers Project Leaders Project Managers Peter Smith and Wendy Kopeschny attended the sod-turning ceremony and will lead the project to completion.
