Bringing people together through sports and recreation

The Township of King is located north of Toronto and is known for its rolling hills, including the Oak Ridges Moraine. The King community is growing quickly and, in response, the township initiated a plan to bring people together and better serve its residents. As part of its vision, the township decided to develop a new recreation centre on 25 acres at the southeast corner of Seneca College’s King Campus.

The new Zancor Centre, which officially opened in January 2025, is an $86 million multi-use recreational space featuring an aquatics centre with a six-lane lap pool and a separate leisure pool. The centre also houses two NHL-sized ice rinks, spectator seating, an artificial turf fieldhouse, an interior running track and a multi-use community space. Outside, residents can gather, walk and enjoy nature in a large community courtyard. Given its proximity to the Oak Ridges Moraine, the township also plans to build connections to the trail system as well as two full-size baseball diamonds, multiple soccer fields and tennis courts in the future.

In addition to its modern amenities, the Zanor Centre is Canada’s first integrated aquatics and ice-sports community centre in Canada to achieve a Zero-Carbon Building Design certification from Canada’s Green Building Council (CaGBC).

Delivering an impactful project

The Township of King engaged our team to provide project management and Bid Document Review® services throughout the development of the new recreation centre.

As project managers, we work with owners as projects evolve, so they can successfully deliver infrastructure that makes a real impact in their communities. The Zancor Centre was no exception. The township’s project team redesigned the building three times, extending the design phase and overall project schedule. However, the township’s dedication to the growing King community drove its desire to increase the building’s size, amenities and overall budget. Once council made the decision to increase the budget and the project team secured the additional funding and grants needed to deliver the township’s vision, the team finalized the design and moved on to construction.

Our team offered the township support and consultation throughout each redesign. Our Bid Document Review service provided added reassurance with a thorough review of the design and procurement documents that limited potential change orders.

The township celebrated the Zancor Centre’s official opening on January 26, 2025. This innovative project not only brings together different sports and activities under one roof, but also offers the community a home for its new Junior A hockey team in a sustainable, flexible gathering space.
