The story.
Our team provided advisory services, real estate, project management, and sustainability services for Canon as they developed their new headquarters. By understanding their needs and overall vision, our team fully integrated into Canon’s culture to ensure the flagship facility reflected the hallmark of their products: simplicity, quality, functionality, integration of glass and light, environmentally conscious, and innovative.
The challenge.
While technology continuously changes, Canon’s commitment to delivering cutting-edge solutions and exceptional customer service remains constant. Since 1973, Canon Canada has been the leading provider in consumer, business, and medical digital imaging solutions.
Canon required a space that reflects their commitment to community and collaboration, and environment and sustainability. They needed a home for their employees based on the foundation of their corporate philosophy, Kyosei: all people, regardless of race, religion, or culture, harmoniously living and working together into the future.
Canon partnered with Colliers Project Leaders to bring this project to life.
The action.
Our Real Estate Services team quickly realized that site selection was critical to Canon’s vision, so we found the perfect site: an 18-acre piece of green land adjacent to a stormwater management pond in Brampton, Ontario. With the city on board and the location secured, it was time to get to work.
Our project management team led the tender and design through to successful construction and full interior fit-out. City regulations forced the building the be re-oriented on-site which threatened the building’s sustainability. Working closely with the design team, we found an innovative solution: outfitting the building with a combination of vertical fins and fritted glass to achieve solar shading objectives.
The outcome.
By establishing Canon’s needs early, the result was a facility that achieved their vision. Immersing ourselves into Canon’s culture allowed us to understand their company values and translate them into the design elements. Natural wood, locally-sourced materials, and an endless source of sunlight are a few of the elements of their new space. Today, the state-of-the-art facility and headquarters for Canon Canada is picture perfect. Staff have access to functional collaboration spaces, a full-service cafeteria, a fitness centre, and beautifully landscaped walking paths surrounding the stormwater pond.
Picture perfect.
Designed by award-winning architects Moriyama and Teshima, Canon’s iconic Canadian headquarters was completed on-time and on-budget in 2016. The five-storey building is home to a showroom, labs and training rooms, a staff cafeteria and fitness centre, and office and collaboration spaces. The central atrium boasts a large skylight that connects all levels. Notable features of the LEED Gold certified facility include a stormwater management pond surrounded by walking paths, and a silvery-white curtain wall with vertical fins of fritted glass around the building’s exterior.
